How should I prepare for a Session?

Here's how to make the most of your one-hour volunteer experience with a nonprofit or small business.

Last updated on 06 Apr, 2026

Congrats! You've made the leap and have volunteered to support a great cause through a Taproot Plus Session! Here are a few tips for preparing your virtual consultation call:

  1. Read up on your Session partner. Through your Taproot Plus Dashboard, you'll find links to their organization's website (if they have one) and mission statement. A little extra Googling never hurts! Skim their social media profiles or web pages to learn more about their work; that way you can breeze through background questions during your Session and quickly get to the heart of the conversation.

  2. Prepare a list of discovery questions. Your Taproot Plus Session is only 60 minutes long, and your pro bono partner will want to maximize the amount of relevant knowledge you can share with them during that time. Having a list of exploratory questions ready to work from will help you immediately clarify your understanding of their organizational challenge.

  3. Stay focused on tangible next steps. When consulting, it can be all too easy to stray down tangents. Due to the fast-paced nature of Taproot Plus Sessions, these one-hour calls are the perfect opportunity to flex your ability to keep discussions in-scope and action-oriented. Keep in mind that you are not committed to working with the nonprofit or small business following this Session, so save time at the end of your call to talk about how they can carry your recommendations forward. It may mean recommending that they connect with additional Taproot Plus volunteers and that's okay!
