My Application Was Declined – What Should I Do Next?

What a declined status means and how to keep moving forward

Last updated on 02 Mar, 2026

Seeing a “declined” status on your application can feel disappointing. It simply means the nonprofit decided to move forward with another volunteer for that particular opportunity.

This is a normal part of the matching process on Taproot Plus. Nonprofits often receive multiple volunteer applications and have to make a choice based on their specific needs, timeline, or preferred experience.

What You Can Do Next

Keep exploring
There are many nonprofits actively looking for skilled volunteers. A declined application doesn’t reflect your value or qualifications.

Refine your search
Use filters to narrow opportunities by skill area and time commitment so you can focus on roles that best match your experience and availability.

Check out this article on How to Find the Right Opportunity on Taproot Plus for practical tips.

Strengthen your application
When applying, clearly connect your professional experience to the nonprofit’s stated needs. A tailored statement of interest can help you stand out.

Ask for recommendations
If you’re unsure where to apply next, reach out to us at help@taprootplus.org. Let us know what causes interest you and what skills you’d like to donate. We’re happy to suggest Projects or Sessions that may be a good fit.

Not every opportunity will be the right match, but the right one is out there. Thank you for being part of the Taproot Plus volunteer community and for offering your skills to support social good.
