How should I prepare for a Session?

Here's how to make the most of your one-hour consultation call with a volunteer.

Last updated on 04 Dec, 2025

Sessions are a great opportunity to get quick answers, creatively brainstorm, or plan for large-scale initiatives! Taproot has volunteers available to share advice with you in areas like marketing, tech, HR, web development, strategy, data, and more. But 60 minutes with a skilled volunteer goes fast! Here's how your organization can get the most value out of these pro bono consultation calls:

  • Keep the focus narrow and avoid trying to fit too many topics into one hour. Remember, you can request unlimited Sessions using your Taproot Plus account! If you find yourself writing down more than three goals for a call, that is a sign to request additional Sessions.

  • Prepare for your time with the volunteer. Write down questions in advance and have relevant notes, documents, and links ready to share.

  • Join the call via computer rather than by phone so you can screen share if needed. Visuals are a great way to add clarity and understanding to a conversation.

  • Clarify expectations. Keep in mind that the volunteer partner for your Session is not required to be available for continued work. When wrapping up your consultation call, ask your volunteer if they're comfortable with you following up with additional questions. If they aren't available, another Taproot Plus volunteer can help!

  • Provide feedback on your experience! The post-engagement survey is a great opportunity to share how a Session went. Your feedback is crucial to helping our nonprofit serve you (and the rest of our community members!) more effectively.
